Pharmacological action of Cordiamine
The analeptic drug Cordiamine is characterized by a mixed effect: it stimulates the central nervous system and chemoreceptors. It affects the vasomotor and respiratory centers of the medulla oblongata.
The drug facilitates the transmission of nerve impulses between neurons, thereby increasing the excitability and sensitivity of the respiratory center to natural irritants such as carbon dioxide.
In addition, Cordiamine contributes to a slight inhibition of inhibition processes in the brain and a longer manifestation of the impulse aftereffect. Due to stimulation of the vasomotor center, peripheral vascular resistance increases, which in turn causes a general increase in blood pressure.
The drug also helps to increase the frequency of respiratory movements, eliminate shallow breathing and return clear consciousness. The use of Cordiamine does not have a direct effect on the cardiovascular system.
KORDIAMIN (drops): reviews
Have you ever experienced a blood pressure of 46 over 29? The question is actually not rhetorical, although I think that almost everyone will say no, this cannot happen, this is collapse and death...
Almost everyone who will read my review is not a doctor, with the exception of a few. Therefore, I will explain my question a little. Even at the Pharmaceutical Academy, we had lectures on various diseases and methods of treating them, including relieving life-threatening conditions. How to help an epileptic, a diabetic, and any person who has lost consciousness. Therefore, working in a pharmacy, I can provide first aid, and really help a person and guide him in the right direction for treatment, and even more so, help loved ones.
My father is already an old man, he is 82 years old. He is disabled (he had one amputation in his youth) …
Contraindications
According to the instructions, Cordiamine is not recommended: in the presence of childhood hyperthermia, the patient’s predisposition to seizures, epilepsy (if the history indicates the possibility of epileptic seizures or convulsive syndrome), as well as in case of individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
Since there is no data confirming the safety of the drug during pregnancy and lactation, Cordiamine is contraindicated during these periods.
During treatment with the drug, it is not recommended to drive cars or other vehicles, or engage in work that requires a quick psychomotor reaction and increased attention.
Instructions for use
Typically, drops and solution for internal use are used in the same way, since they are the same drug, but from different pharmaceutical companies. It is measured in drops. The dosage depends on the age of the patient:
- for adults, the maximum number of drops per day is 180, and 15–40 drops are allowed to be taken at a time, maximum 60;
- for children under 10 years of age, a single dose corresponds to their age and is taken once a day, for example, a 6-year-old child is given 6 drops of Cordiamine, and a 9-year-old child is given 9;
- for children over 10 years of age and adolescents under 16 years of age, the single dose is 10 drops, and can be taken only once a day.
The drug is taken in its pure form, but can be diluted with water and then drunk. It can be taken at any time, that is, it does not depend on meals.
The duration of the course depends on the normalization of the condition and is determined by the reason that caused the decrease in blood pressure. In case of suffocation, it is enough to take it occasionally, and in case of an infectious disease, surgery or shock, the course lasts several days until complete restoration of functions.
Injections are administered intramuscularly, subcutaneously or intravenously, and the dosage also depends on the age of the patient:
- adults are administered 1-2 ml, maximum dose - 6 ml;
- children and adolescents are administered from 0.1 to 0.75 ml of solution (the younger the child, the less medication is required).
When administered intravenously or subcutaneously, it is advisable to inject into the veins in the arms, slowly injecting the medicine. An intramuscular injection should be given in the thigh area. Since the administration of the medicine is accompanied by severe pain, the injection site should first be treated with Novocaine.
When treated with a solution, you should not drive a car or operate complex mechanisms that require increased attention, concentration, and psychomotor reactions.
Directions for use and dosage
Cordiamine drops are prescribed to adults in a dose of 15 to 40 drops two to three times a day. The dose of the drug for children is calculated based on age: one drop – one year of life. Children are recommended to take Cordiamine drops two to three times a day.
According to the instructions, Cordiamine is also administered intravenously, subcutaneously and intramuscularly.
Children are given injections 2-3 times a day, administering 0.1-0.75 milliliters. The exact amount of the drug is calculated taking into account age:
- Up to one year – 0.1 ml;
- From one to four years – 0.15-0.25 ml;
- From five to six years – 0.3 ml;
- From seven to nine – 0.5 ml;
- From ten to fourteen years – 0.75 ml.
For children over fourteen years of age and adults, a single dose of 1-2 milliliters is administered 2-3 times a day. The maximum single dose for adults when administered subcutaneously should not be more than 2 milliliters, the daily dose should not be more than 6 milliliters.
The dose of Cordiamin for the indication “poisoning with narcotic drugs, hypnotics or analgesics” is from three to five milliliters.
To reduce the pain of intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, you can inject procaine immediately before their administration. The drug is administered intravenously slowly.
In case of an overdose of Cordiamin, the following occur: tonic-clonic convulsions, agitation, increased blood pressure. Treatment is intravenous administration of euphilin.
Description, composition and release form
The composition of the described drug is extremely simple - it is an aqueous solution of the active substance (niketamide). It is Niketamide, which dissolves in specially purified water, that is the active component in all forms of Cordiamin. The concentration of this substance is always the same - 25% or, in other words, 250 mg/1 ml of the drug. Cordiamine does not contain any other additional substances.
Solution for injection Cordiamin
On a note! The color of the drug is often transparent, but sometimes it has a slight yellow tint. The smell is strong and specific, it cannot be confused with anything else.
Table. Release form of Cordiamin
Name | Short description |
Drops for internal use | They are produced in glass bottles, the volume of which can be 15, 25 or 30 ml. They are equipped with special nozzles that facilitate more convenient dosing of liquid. |
Solution for internal use | Available in the same bottles as drops, with the same dosage. The different release forms are explained by the fact that the drug is produced by several pharmaceutical companies that have patented it under different names. Although, in fact, the solution and drops are the same drug. |
Injection solution | It is produced in glass ampoules of 1 and 2 ml, sold in packs of 10 ampoules containing a 25% solution. |
Interaction with other drugs
Cordiamine, when used simultaneously with antidepressants and drugs that stimulate the central nervous system, enhances their effect. Taking phenothiazide derivatives, para-aminosalicylic acid and general anesthesia together with Cordiamin reduces its effect.
Cordiamine reduces the effectiveness of hypnotics, antiepileptics, antipsychotics, narcotics and anxiolytics, and does not act against the background of deep anesthesia.
Taking reserpine can enhance the convulsive effect of Cordiamin.
How to use
Indications for use in adults: Orally, up to 40 drops up to 3 times a day.
Subcutaneously, intramuscularly or intravenously 1–2 ml up to 3 times a day. The maximum allowed intake is up to 60 drops (2 ml) at a time, per day - up to 180 drops (6 ml). Indications for use in children: the number of drops inside should be calculated in proportion to the child’s age, frequency of use up to 3 times a day. Subcutaneously, intramuscularly or intravenously 0.1-0.75 ml, also proportional to the age of the child.
Is it possible for pregnant women: Cordiamine for low blood pressure in pregnant women can be used exclusively for a short time, in emergency cases, since women during pregnancy up to 4 months often suffer from low blood pressure, which is caused by hormonal surges in the body. The result is a feeling of weakness, dizziness, and fainting.
Against the background of low blood pressure, vomiting occurs, which is not related to toxicosis. For example, in case of critical hypotension, pre-fainting, you need to take 27-30 drops of Cordiamine to increase blood pressure.
It is forbidden to use Cordiamine on an ongoing basis.
During pregnancy, you need to adhere to a healthy lifestyle, eat well, get enough sleep, breathe fresh air and not expose yourself to stress.
For low blood pressure: it is recommended to use Cordiamine in the form of drops when the condition is not life-threatening;
in the form of an injection should be used in emergency situations, if it is not possible to take the medicine yourself (in case of fainting). It is allowed to use Cordiamine periodically up to 30 drops in the early morning and up to 35 drops at any time of the day if the pressure has dropped sharply. It is forbidden to exceed the dosage and take the drug continuously.
Can it be used by animals: Cordiamine can be used in animals (cats and dogs) with the same symptoms as in humans: impaired respiratory function, suffocation, if poisoning has occurred with various drugs and gas.
The mechanism of action of the drug is the same as in humans - to increase blood pressure and ease breathing. Cordiamine is also used to treat black spots on the tongue of dogs.
It is strictly forbidden to use Cordiamin in animals that are at risk of seizures, have significant blood loss (or other blood problems).
The dose for taking Cordiamine is calculated for the body weight of the animal, namely:
- For injection, 0.1 - 0.12 ml of medication per 1 kg of body weight, use up to 3 times a day.
- In the form of drops, it is prescribed before feeding, mixed in advance with water, in the following dosage: for dogs up to 30 drops 2 - 3 times a day, for cats - up to 3 drops 2 - 3 times a day.
To accurately determine whether a drug increases or decreases blood pressure in an animal, you need to consult a specialist. Only a doctor can write a prescription for use. Restrictions on use:
- individual rejection of drug components (niketamide);
- the possibility of epilepsy and seizures of various nature;
- overheating of the body in children.
Side effects:
- the occurrence of allergic reactions on the face;
- redness and itching of the skin;
- gagging and feelings of nausea;
- spasms and muscle twitching (primarily around the mouth);
- heart rhythm disturbance (cardiamia);
- state of anxiety.
Description of interactions with other medications (contraindications):
- it is contraindicated to use together with vitamin C;
- increases the effect of antidepressants and other stimulants;
- minimizes the effects of narcotics, painkillers and anti-epileptic drugs;
- sympatholytics increase the effect of Cordiamin;
- Anesthesia medications reduce the effect of Cordiamin.
Dosage forms (injections)
Cordiamine in the form of injections is produced in special ampoules, the volume of which is 1 or 2 ml, and the concentration of the active substance is 25%. A standard cardboard package of the drug for injection contains 10 ampoules.
In this dosage form, the medication can be used intravenously, intramuscularly or subcutaneously.
For adults, the average dose is 1-2 ml with a frequency of 1-3 times a day. A maximum adult can take up to 2 ml of the drug at a time or 6 ml per day. The dosage for children varies from 0.1 to 0.75 ml depending on age. The frequency of administration is the same as for adults.
If it is necessary to stabilize blood pressure in case of poisoning with a sleeping pill, narcotic, or analgesic, the dose is increased to 3-5 ml at a time. In the case of intravenous use, it is strongly recommended that the drug be administered slowly.
The admission process is as follows:
- the ampoule is opened;
- the solution is drawn into a syringe;
- the appropriate needle is selected (it differs depending on the injection method);
- Cordiamine is injected into a vein, under the skin or muscle;
- with the intravenous method, the medicine is injected into the veins of the arms or the subclavian vein;
- with the intramuscular method, the medicine is injected into the femoral area;
- With the subcutaneous method, the medicine is injected into the arm.
You should know that intramuscular and subcutaneous injections of Cordiamin are very painful, so before use it is necessary to inject Novocaine or another painkiller in the same place.
Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
The group of stimulant drugs
“Cordiamin” has a stimulating effect on metabolic processes in the structures of the central nervous system.
It stimulates the activation of the central nervous system, especially for such a structure as the medulla oblongata. It contains respiratory and vasomotor centers.
Stimulation of the respiratory center occurs in part due to reflex mechanisms that are associated with the stimulation of certain receptors in the carotid glomeruli. Under the influence of the medicine, breathing becomes more frequent and its depth increases (this is especially noticeable in situations where the respiratory function was depressed and the person’s breathing was shallow or rare). In parallel, there is an increase in blood pressure numbers. This is typical for patients who have a tendency to hypotension.
“Cordiamine” has no direct effect on the heart muscle, it will not change the functioning of the heart, and does not cause vasoconstriction of either large or peripheral vessels.
Attention! The medicine may cause a sharp increase in blood pressure. Categorically cannot be used in the presence of hypertension.
Cordiamine drops and solution under reduced pressure
The drug in the form of drops or solution is produced in glass capsules. The medicine is available in 15, 25, 30 ml packaging in one bottle. You can attach a special dropper attachment to each of them. With the nozzle, dosing the drug is much easier.
In fact, Cordiamine drops and solution are the same dosage form. They are called differently due to two pharmaceutical companies that patented the drug under different names.
Solution for injection Cordiamin
Cordiamine in this dosage form is used according to one instruction. Taking the drug does not depend on the time of eating. The recommended frequency of use is two or three times a day, 15 to 40 drops of solution. The maximum dose for adults is no more than 180 drops.
Before use, experts advise diluting the medicine with water. If the patient is under 18 years old, then the dose corresponds to the age of the child in drops.
A single dose of the drug is no more than 60 drops of solution.
The drug retains its therapeutic effect for 3 years if stored in a room protected from light with a temperature below 25 degrees. Cordiamine will not lose its properties if it is not frozen.
Reviews
“Cordiamine is a drug that has an immediate effect when, in an emergency, it is necessary to raise the patient’s blood pressure.”
Victoria, emergency doctor
“My father has been suffering from arterial hypotension for a long time. At my last appointment, the cardiologist recommended taking this medication to increase my blood pressure. The drug is inexpensive. My father is quite pleased with its therapeutic effect.”
Olga, 36
“I took the drug as prescribed by the therapist when it was necessary to increase my blood pressure. The medicine helped in a short period of time and had a lasting effect. The only negative is the form of the substance. It is difficult to accurately measure the required number of drops several times a day.”

Cordiamine drops: indications for use
The drug Cordiamin has a powerful effect and is used in severe conditions when respiratory function is depressed and cardiac activity is weakened, as well as when blood pressure drops.
According to its chemical composition, cordiamine belongs to substances that stimulate the central nervous system. This effect leads to increased excitability of the brain, namely its vasomotor and respiratory centers. These chemical compounds are respiratory analeptics; their action is aimed at regulating breathing through activation of chemoreceptors in the carotid glomeruli. Cordiamin, as an analeptic, facilitates the transmission of nerve impulses between neurons, while sensitivity to irritants increases in the respiratory center.
Under the influence of cordiamine, breathing is stimulated, which becomes deep and frequent, heart contractions become more frequent, and blood pressure rises. This drug stimulates the nervous system but does not affect the heart. The positive effect that Cordiamine has on low blood pressure is known. Indications for the use of a medicine are determined by the totality of its analeptic properties.
The drug Cordiamine is available in various forms - drops, oral solution and injection solution. The choice of dosage form depends on the disease and the rate of delivery of the medicine. If you urgently need to administer the drug, then give an injection. Cordiamine is administered intravenously slowly; subcutaneous and intramuscular administration may cause pain. Therefore, before administering the medicine, it is recommended to give an anesthetic injection of novocaine. Cordiamine drops should be dissolved in water when taken.
Cordiamine drops, when taken correctly, provide a powerful positive effect. But you need to remember that this drug must be prescribed by a specialist who will take into account all the risks, contraindications and select the correct dose. To do this, the doctor must take into account blood pressure and heart rate. Only then will taking Cordiamin be beneficial and avoid unwanted complications.
In many severe conditions, when cardiac activity weakens and respiratory function is depressed, the drug Cordiamin is used. Indications for its use are as follows: decreased tone of the nervous system, chronic circulatory disorders, severe infectious diseases. Cordiamine is also successfully prescribed for shock conditions of various origins, poisoning with sleeping pills and narcotic drugs, during operations and in the postoperative period.
To increase low blood pressure, but only periodically, not as a permanent drug, people with hypotension can take Cordiamine. The instructions allow you to familiarize yourself with the main characteristics and find out the contraindications of the medicine, but it is attached more for information purposes, since you can buy Cordiamine only with a prescription issued by a doctor. There are many positive reviews about the high effectiveness of the drug Cordiamine.
You need to be extremely careful when taking Cordiamine drops. After all, there are a number of contraindications to taking this drug. It should not be used by persons who are predisposed to convulsive reactions or have a history of epilepsy. Cordiamine usually does not cause complications if the dose is chosen correctly. But with an overdose of the drug, there may be undesirable reactions in the form of convulsions, nausea, and allergic reactions. Complications occur more often with the injection of cordiamine than with drops.
The drug Cordiamine is an effective means of stimulating breathing. There is an excellent effect of this drug in stimulating the nervous system and raising blood pressure.
